 Forest Planning
Intensive planning is vital to meeting the daily fibre requirements of our operation and ensuring forest resources and the biological diversity they contain are sustained into perpetuity. Before a single tree is cut, various forest management options are simulated using tools such as the Geographic Information System, Silviculture Information System, Block Tracking System and Biological Assessment Model. These enable woodlands staff to predict the impacts of various practices, so that the most appropriate silviculture and harvesting methods can be employed.
Over the years the company’s emphasis has shifted from harvesting wood to growing trees. Our long-term forest management strategy sets out a plan for enhancing growth and yield through intensive silviculture and tree improvement, while minimizing loss through prevention of fire, disease and insect damage.
