 Key Facts
- With a history of operations dating back to the early 1900s in Saskatchewan and to the early 1920s in Alberta, the Millar Western Group of Companies is one of the oldest forest products businesses in Western Canada.
- Millar Western Forest Products Ltd. operates four production facilities in Alberta:
- A bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (BCTMP) mill in Whitecourt, and
- Three sawmills, located in Whitecourt, Boyle and Fox Creek
- Woodlands operations supporting these production facilities are based out of Whitecourt, Boyle and Fox Creek; together, they deliver approximately 2.5 million cubic metres of timber, and plant approximately 9.7 million seedlings, each year.
- At its lumber facilities in Whitecourt, Boyle and Fox Creek, Millar Western produces approximately 480 million board feet of dimension lumber annually, for Canadian, U.S. and overseas customers, making it the largest Alberta-based lumber producer.
- Millar Western’s BCTMP mill produces about 300,000 air-dried metric tonnes of pulp per year, for customers in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
- The company employs more than 700 people on a direct, full-time basis in its mill and woodlands operations and indirectly employs hundreds of others on a seasonal basis to support activities such as harvesting and forest renewal, making it a leading employer in the communities where it operates.
- Millar Western’s totally chlorine-free BCTMP mill in Whitecourt was the first operation in North America and the second pulp mill in the world to achieve ISO 14001 environmental management certification.
- Millar Western was the first company to have its mill and woodlands operations certified under FORESTCARE, the Alberta forest industry’s stringent code of practice governing care of the forest, environment and communities.
- In addition to FORESTCARE certification, the company’s Whitecourt and Boyle woodlands operations are certified under the ISO 14001 environmental standard. The Whitecourt forest management agreement (FMA) area is also certified to the CSA-Z809 sustainable forest management standard, which is part of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).
