Public Involvement
At Millar Western, we believe one of the smartest moves we can make is to listen to others who share in the use and protection of forest resources. Whether other industrial users, recreational users, or individuals with knowledge of traditional uses within the forest, all stakeholders are afforded opportunities to discuss our plans and bring forward any questions or concerns for consideration. In addition to yearly open houses on forest planning and operational activities, Millar Western supports the operation of two advisory committees in Alberta:

Regional Forest Advisory Committee (RFAC)
In co-operation with Alberta Newsprint Company, Blue Ridge Lumber, and Mostowich Lumber, Millar Western has created a regional forest advisory committee to consult on the local forest industry’s management planning and harvest operations in Northwest Alberta.

Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC)
In 2001, Millar Western invited stakeholders from the Whitecourt community to sit on an Environmental Advisory Committee focussed on issues surrounding the operation of our sawmill and pulp mill. The committee provides a vehicle for two-way communication between our local public and mill employees on community views and the company’s plans, policies and practices.

Swan Hills Forest Communications Group
Like the RFAC, the Swan Hills Forest Communications Group represents a shared forest industry effort to address public concerns about forestry operations in the Swan Hills area. Formed in 2004, the group, which includes representation from several forest companies and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, as well as local residents and interest groups, has become an effective venue for sharing information, identifying forest values, and discussing mattes of mutual concern to the forest companies working in the Swan Hills area and the people who live there.

Public Participation Group
To assist in the development of its 20-year Detailed Forest Management Plans (DFMP), which the company produces every 10 years, Millar Western strikes a public participation group (PPG). Composed of representatives from communities in and around its operating area, the PPG contributes to the identification of forest values, ensuring that community priorities are accommodated in the final plan.
